On Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show, hosted by Kwamina Sam Baney, the Director of Communications for the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Mr. Takyi Addo, expressed worry about the increasing invasion of the Ghanaian market sector by foreigners without proper authorization or qualifications.
Mr. Addo highlighted that the influx of foreigners into the retail space has made the work of the association very challenging. According to him, GUTA struggles to gather accurate data on traders, which creates confusion whenever they are required to provide reports to their leadership and the Chief Executive Officer.
He further reminded the public that a law was enacted in 1994, and later amended in 2013, to protect Ghana’s retail market from unfair competition by foreigners. However, he noted that some Ghanaians are making the situation worse by shielding foreigners and helping them bypass regulations.
Mr. Addo emphasized that foreigners operating in the sector must either come forward and go through the proper legal processes or withdraw completely from the Ghanaian retail market to ensure peace and sanity.
