On September 11, 2025, during an interview, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and National Deputy Welfare Officer, Mr. Harry Oduro Awuku, expressed strong concerns about the increasing involvement of foreigners in Ghana’s retail sector.
Mr. Oduro emphasized that the influx of foreigners into the retail space has made the work of the association very challenging. He recalled that last year in Koforidua, GUTA had begun an exercise to address the issue, but the regional security officials pleaded with them to suspend the action due to the general elections, promising that the law would be enforced after the elections and a change of government.
However, according to him, despite engaging with the new government, no concrete action has been taken.
He stressed that since authorities have failed to act, it has become the responsibility of GUTA to step up and protect Ghana’s retail market from being taken over by foreigners.
Mr. Oduro further noted the issue is not only happening in Accra but is also widespread in Koforidua and across the country. He explained that the current exercise being carried out is legal, involving collaboration with the Immigration Service, and assured Ghanaians that appropriate measures will be taken.
He emphasized that progress is being made, citing the closure shops at the Magazine area as part of the ongoing enforcement exercise.
