The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called for greater involvement of young people in shaping policies and participating in governance across the region.
Mohammed Saani Adams (Hajj), ECOWAS Director of Youth Development and Empowerment, emphasized this during a recent youth empowerment program. He noted that young people across member states have a fundamental right to contribute to policy formulation, decision-making, leadership, and governance processes that directly affect their lives and communities.
According to Mr. Adams, active youth participation is crucial for strengthening democracy and ensuring sustainable governance—particularly in countries like Ghana. He explained that when young people are meaningfully engaged in leadership, “they become more effective, committed, and better equipped to drive national development.”
Mr. Adams also stressed the importance of safeguarding young people’s right to free expression and opinion. He urged leaders to listen to the voices of their youth, who make up about 37 percent of the region’s population.
“Anyone who seeks integrated and inclusive development must listen to the youth,” he stated. “When young people are allowed to express their views freely, leaders can better understand their needs, offer relevant support, and help them reach their full potential for national and regional growth.”
