According to Mr. Mengisto Opoku Akowuah, who is the focal person for Ghana AIDS Commission in Ahafo ano south west district, people between the ages of 15 upward often engage in high-risk unprotected sex, contributing to the rising cases of HIV in the country.
Speaking to the media, he indicated the fact that most of these young people are getting infected because they live recklessly with little concern for their health.
According to him, over 63,159 infected in the year 2024 in the Ashanti region as well as 413 people affected in the Ahafo Ano south west district. Between 2024 , new infections among young and adults people aged 15 upward increased by 45%.
This statement is supported by the findings of the 2024 Demographic and Health Survey report, which clearly shows that adult people take a lot of risks that expose them to HIV infections but do not protect themselves.
His comments follow the latest Demographic and Health Survey report by the Ghana AIDS Commission, which reveals that over 186, 772 in three regions, Ashanti Region , Eastern Regio and greater Accra region.
Overall, over 185,772 Ghanaians are living with the disease, who tested positive previously unaware of their status.
