The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, led by Sector Minister Hon. Naa Momo Lartey, has paid a courtesy visit to several schools in the Greater Accra Region as part of efforts to assess the implementation of the national School Feeding Programme.
Addressing the media after her tour, Hon. Lartey explained that the visits were aimed at monitoring ongoing activities to enable parliament to gain a clear and fair understanding of how the programme is being executed. She noted that when the ministry appears before the parliamentary committee, their reports and testimonies will align with what they have personally observed on the ground.
According to her, the ministry is satisfied with the progress made so far and is nearing the completion of its report. She added that beginning next year, a more extensive monitoring exercise will be rolled out, in line with President Mahama’s vision of ensuring that schoolchildren receive nutritious meals to support their growth and good health.
Hon. Lartey also revealed that during her visit to one of the schools, the headmaster informed her that enrolment had increased significantly because of the School Feeding Programme, making it difficult to admit more pupils. She stressed that such challenges emphasize the need for regular field visits, as staying only in office prevents the ministry from fully understanding the realities on the ground.
She noted that the firsthand observations will strengthen parliamentary debates and ensure that the committee can conduct thorough investigations and provide informed recommendations. These recommendations, she added, will be forwarded to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to enhance the effective delivery of nutritious meals to schoolchildren across the country.
