A new lawn tennis court has been commissioned at Apirede in the Okere Constituency to promote sports development and encourage physical fitness among the youth.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Nana Saforo Okwampah, the Apiredehene, emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in community development. He noted that since he became chief in 1994, development in Apirede has never been the work of one individual but the effort of the entire community. He urged residents not to wait for others to act when they see something wrong, but rather take initiative to bring positive change.
Nana Saforo Okwampah also highlighted the significance of hosting the event at the school premises. He recalled that when he became chief during the era of former President Jerry John Rawlings, with John Dramani Mahama then serving as Minister for Communications and now President of Ghana, the Apirede Presbyterian Primary School was in a very poor and abandoned state. He explained that through unity and support from leaders at the time, the community came together to rehabilitate the school, which was finally completed in the early 2000s. He stressed that the school has benefited many children from Apirede and continues to serve the community.
The Member of Parliament for Okere Constituency, Hon. Daniel Addo Kenneth, expressed his joy at the commissioning of the tennis court. He commended the Accra Social Tennis Club, whose president and members traveled from Accra to support and construct the facility in Apirede. He noted that most tennis courts are located in Accra, and having one in Apirede will help nurture talent, promote exercise, and benefit both the youth and children in the area.
Hon. Addo Kenneth stated that his priority as a Member of Parliament is development. As part of his support, he donated GH¢5,000 and promised to provide equipment for training. He assured the community that measures would be taken to protect the facility from destruction. He added that tennis promotes good health, physical strength, and helps prevent illness through regular exercise.
The MP also expressed gratitude to Star of Oil, the main sponsor of the program, for their generous support, which contributed significantly to the success of the event.
