Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul believes the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot afford to experiment with a new presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 elections, insisting on a tried-and-true choice.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Mr Nitiwul stated that logistical and strategic realities make it impractical for the party to start again with a new face.
“We have no time to market a new candidate,” he stated. “We don’t have the time to change all the billboards and change every other thing.”
He claims that candidates who have already undergone national testing are favored by election history.
“The rule of thumb is always that Ghanaians have never voted for a first timer,” he said. “We cannot risk having our own candidate be a first timer.”
Mr. Nitiwul contended that since the party already has a candidate with national exposure and electoral experience, there would be no need to take such a risk.
“When you can get somebody who is the second time, and the person will win you the elections, we cannot risk it,” he added.
“The difficulty for NPP is that we should never lose in 2028 because it will be disastrous for us,” he said.
