The Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, Ransford Owusu Boakye, has visited the bereaved family of Constance Nyarko, popularly known as Yaa Yaa, and tomato traders at the Koforidua Market following her tragic death in Burkina Faso.
Yaa Yaa, a well-known tomato trader in Koforidua, was reportedly killed together with seven others in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso.
Her remains were subsequently buried in the neighbouring country.
The visit, undertaken on behalf of the Eastern Regional Minister, was to commiserate with the grieving family and the market women who have been deeply affected by the incident.
Addressing the family, the MCE expressed government’s condolences and assured them of support during this difficult period.
He noted that government is aware of the concerns raised regarding the burial of the deceased outside Ghana and pledged that their appeal would be communicated to the appropriate authorities.
“We share in your pain as a municipality and as a government. We will continue to stand with you,” he assured.
He advised traders to also be security conscious in their work so they do not risk their lives.
Meanwhile, Tomato traders at the Koforidua Market used the opportunity to reiterate their call for government to facilitate the exhumation and return of Yaa Yaa’s body for reburial on her ancestral land.
According to them, giving her a proper burial in Koforidua will bring closure to both the family and the trading community.
The traders also expressed concern over a possible shortage of tomatoes in the market following her death, describing her as one of the key suppliers.
The MCE assured the traders that government would engage relevant stakeholders to address their concerns and help stabilize supply in the market.
