Former Member of parliament for Abuakwa North, Hon. Gifty Twum Ampofo, has underscored the importance of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in Ghana’s education system, describing them as a vital platform for collaboration between parents and teachers.
Speaking in an interview on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney, Hon. Gifty reflected on policies implemented during her time, particularly regarding the regulation of PTA activities.
“You will recall that during our time, because we wanted to streamline financial issues, PTAs were not very active,” she explained. According to her, the move formed part of efforts to address concerns surrounding financial management within schools.
She noted that at the time, the government indicated plans to reintroduce the PTA system. However, she expressed concern about the persistent issue of money collection during PTA meetings.
“The saddest part, however, is that money is often collected during PTA meetings,” she stated.
Hon. Gifty stressed that while financial concerns may arise, the core purpose of PTAs should not be overlooked. She emphasized that PTAs serve as an essential interaction platform between teachers and parents, fostering communication and collective decision-making for the benefit of students.
“If we decide to stop PTA activities and later have a section of parents say bringing back PTA is a good idea, we must understand that PTA serves as an interaction platform between teachers and parents,” she said.
She concluded that the relevance of PTAs remains evident, adding that the system introduced during her time played an important role in strengthening engagement between schools and families.
