Newly declared Member of Parliament-elect for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has dedicated his by-election victory to the constituents he will represent, insisting the triumph belongs to the people rather than himself.
Baba Jamal secured 10,884 votes in Tuesday’s poll, defeating the NPP candidate, Yussif Ali Baba, who garnered 4,009 votes.
Addressing supporters shortly after the official declaration, the MP-elect struck a humble tone, shifting focus from personal celebration to collective achievement.
“I want to thank the Almighty Allah for giving us this victory,” he said, before emphasizing, “This victory is not for me, Baba Jamal alone, it’s for the good people of Ayawaso East.”
He assured residents that his return to Parliament would usher in what he described as a new chapter for the constituency.
“The resetting of Ayawaso East starts now. We are going to Parliament. We are coming to reset the whole constituency and ensure that what East Ayawaso deserves comes to pass,” he declared.
Baba Jamal also acknowledged the support of the leadership of the National Democratic congress (NDC), expressing gratitude to the party’s national executives, chairman, and General Secretary for their backing throughout the campaign.
He further extended appreciation to his excellency John Dramani Mahama, thanking him for the confidence reposed in him and for previous opportunities to serve.
The elected MP did not overlook the media’s role during the campaign period. He thanked journalists for their coverage and called for a constructive working relationship moving forward.
“I want to believe that I’m going to form a partnership with the press as we reset Ayawaso East, so we are going to work together. Please correct us when we are wrong, but please do that in a good and proper professional way,” he appealed.
With his victory now confirmed, Baba Jamal says his focus is firmly on delivering development and progress for the people of Ayawaso East.
