The Municipal Chief Executive for Abuakwa North, Hon. Charles Darko Yeboah, has called on citizens to translate Ghana’s independence into tangible development that improves the lives of ordinary people.
Speaking at the 69th Independence Day celebration held at the W.B.M Zion SHS Field in Kukurantumi, the MCE stressed that independence should not only be marked with ceremonies but reflected in better schools, jobs, roads, water, sanitation, and security.
Under the national theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” Hon. Yeboah said Ghana’s independence was achieved through sacrifice and must now be protected through responsible leadership, unity, and hard work. According to him, the country’s current struggle is no longer against colonial rule but against poverty, corruption, disease, and division.
Highlighting development initiatives in the municipality, the MCE praised the government of President John Dramani Mahama for implementing programmes aimed at boosting livelihoods. He revealed that Abuakwa North had benefited from 10,000 broilers under the “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” initiative, a move he said would promote food security, employment, and income generation.
He also noted that 50 apprentices and 10 craft masters in the municipality have benefited from the National Apprenticeship Programme, receiving tools such as sewing machines, welding equipment, hairdressing machines, and steel-bending machines to support their trades.

On local development efforts, Hon. Yeboah outlined measures taken to improve sanitation and security at the New Tafo Market, including the desilting of gutters, installation of streetlights, new market gates, and the ongoing construction of five-unit washroom facilities.
In the education sector, the Municipal Assembly has facilitated the construction of a six-unit classroom block at Ati Amafrom M/A School and two kindergarten blocks at Anomabo, with plans to distribute furniture to schools across the municipality to enhance teaching and learning.
He further announced that 23 boreholes have been drilled across communities to improve access to potable water, while the municipality is ready to deploy machines under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) to address road challenges.
Touching on governance and national development, the MCE urged citizens to uphold integrity, transparency, and accountability, stressing that development requires discipline and collective responsibility.
He also reaffirmed the Municipal Assembly’s commitment to security and environmental protection, declaring a firm stance against illegal mining (galamsey) and warning against activities of nomadic herdsmen that threaten peace and livelihoods in the municipality.
Hon. Yeboah urged Ghanaians to remain united and committed to building a prosperous nation, noting that independence is an ongoing responsibility that must be sustained through hard work, honesty, and patriotism.
