The Koforidua High Court in the Eastern region has granted bail to Freddie Blay, the former chairman of the New Patriotic Party.
He was given GHC 800,000 in bail with two sureties.
On Monday, March 16, 2026, Mr. Blay, a seasoned politician and lawyer, was turned over to the Akropong Police after Accra police carried out a criminal arrest warrant that had been pending for about a year.
According to reports, Mr. Blay became ill after his arrest and was sent to the hospital.
The Akropong Circuit Court had already remanded Mr. Blay due to a purported demolition issue at Kitase. As the investigation into the case continues, he is anticipated to appear before the circuit court once more on April 9, 2026.
On Monday, March 16, 2026, a bench warrant was executed in Accra, leading to his arrest. Police claim that the warrant was issued in April 2025 as a result of his alleged failure to show up for his planned arraignment and to accept many requests to cooperate with investigations.
The main focus of the investigation is a piece of land in Kitase that Mr. Blay allegedly purchased in 1994. He is accused by the prosecution of giving the order to demolish a house that was being built on the contested property.
The accusations are vehemently denied by Mr. Blay’s defense team, though. They contend that instead of ordering the demolition of any buildings, he gave the order to remove a bare plot of land in January 2026 in order to keep harmful reptiles from using it as a breeding ground.
They further contend that the case is civil in character rather than criminal, pointing out that even though the complainant had previously won a favorable decision at the Koforidua High Court, it is presently being appealed.
