Residents of Kuano in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region have issued an urgent appeal for intervention following the invasion of illegal miners, whose activities are causing extensive environmental damage.
Community members say large tracts of farmland have been destroyed, while key water bodies that serve as the main source of livelihood and domestic use have been heavily polluted.
Despite several attempts by local leaders and residents to resist the encroachment, the illegal miners are reported to have persisted in their operations.
The community is now calling on government authorities to take immediate action, specifically urging the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Ayensuano District Chief Executive (DCE) to intervene.
Residents further stress the need for swift deployment of the police and other relevant state agencies to contain the situation and prevent further deterioration.
