Former Ghana Football Association Technical Director Oti Akenteng says he will not be shocked if the Black Stars pull off a surprise victory over England in their crucial Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Both sides head into the encounter on the back of winning starts to their campaigns, setting up what promises to be one of the standout matches of the group stage.
The European heavyweight opened their tournament with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia under manager Thomas Tuchel. After a difficult first half, the Three Lions responded strongly following tactical adjustments from the German coach, underlining the squad’s depth and flexibility.
Ghana also began their World Cup journey positively, edging Panama 1-0 thanks to a dramatic late winner. The victory was particularly important for the Black Stars, who had struggled for form before the tournament after going six matches without a win.
In an interview with Koforidua-based Swiit FM, Oti Akenteng stressed he will not be surprised if the Black Stars defeat England in the high-stakes clash tonight.
“I won’t be surprised if Ghana beat England because football is full of surprises. Look at how Cape Verde managed to hold Spain, and Senegal’s defeat to Norway also shows that anything can happen in football.
England could make mistakes and we must be ready to capitalize on them, but we also need to be very careful because they are a well-drilled side coached by one of the best managers in the world.
We should not focus on Harry Kane alone. Our attention must be on the entire England team because they have quality all over the pitch,” he added.
A victory for either side would place them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stage, making Monday’s showdown one of the most anticipated matches of the group phase.
England sit top of Group L with three points, followed by Ghana, who are also on three points but trail the Three Lions on goal difference.
