Forty-nine(49) out of 52 aspirants who picked nomination forms have successfully filed to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Eastern Regional executive elections, with seven women among those seeking positions.
Chairman of the Eastern Regional Elections Committee, Jamal Konney, disclosed this on Thursday, October 15, 2026, after the close of nominations.
According to him, 48 aspirants submitted their nomination forms physically, while one filed online.
Three aspirants who picked forms failed to file their nominations.
Two were seeking the Regional Organiser position, while the other was interested in the Regional Communications Officer position.
Mr. Jamal Konney also disclosed that the committee had received two petitions following the close of nominations.
He said the petitions would be forwarded to the appropriate committee for consideration, explaining that his committee’s mandate was to organise the elections rather than adjudicate complaints.
“We have received two petitions, and it is not our responsibility to go into the petitions. We will hand them over to the committee responsible for that,” he said.
Seven women among 49 aspirants
On gender representation, Mr. Konney said seven women had filed nominations for various positions in the regional executive elections.
Five are contesting for the Regional Women’s Organiser and Deputy Women’s Organiser positions, while one is seeking the position of Deputy Communications Officer and another is contesting for Deputy Organiser.
The nominations recorded three aspirants for Regional Chairman, six for Regional Secretary, four each for First Vice Chairman and Deputy Organiser, and three for Treasurer.
Two aspirants each filed for Deputy Secretary, Regional Organiser, Regional Communications Officer, Women’s Organiser and Zongo Caucus Coordinator.
Six aspirants also filed for Deputy Communications Officer, while three are contesting for Deputy Women’s Organiser.
Richard Etornam Nyarko was the sole aspirant to pick and file nomination forms for the Regional Youth Organiser position, placing him on course to retain the position unopposed, subject to the party’s electoral procedures.
Mr. Konney assured aspirants that the committee would conduct a free, fair and credible election without bias.
“Our main responsibility is to ensure that we conduct very free and fair elections and make sure that we get credible people to man the affairs of the region and ensure that we win the 2028 national elections,” he said.
Vetting of aspirants is scheduled for October 16 and 17, 2026, while the NDC Eastern Regional executive elections are expected to take place on November 14 and 15, 2026.
