The Accra High Court is expected to hear the bail application of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, today, Thursday, October 15, 2026.
Wontumi’s legal team is seeking his release on bail pending the determination of his appeal against his conviction and 20-year prison sentence for illegal mining-related offences linked to a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
The application was initially scheduled for hearing on August 19, 2026, but proceedings could not go ahead after Wontumi and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, were absent from court. The matter was subsequently adjourned after the court was informed that the presiding judge was unavailable.
The defence team is expected to present its arguments in support of the application, seeking to secure Wontumi’s temporary release while the appeal process continues.
However, the Attorney-General has opposed the application, arguing that Wontumi poses a flight risk if granted bail. The State has also challenged the grounds advanced by the defence in support of his request.
The court is expected to consider arguments from both the defence and the prosecution before determining whether to grant bail pending appeal.
The outcome of the hearing could determine whether the former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman remains in custody while his appeal is being considered or is released subject to any conditions imposed by the court.
