The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Eastern Regional Vetting Committee says 48 out of 49 aspirants who filed nominations for the party’s regional executive elections have been vetted and qualified to contest.
Chairman of the Regional Election committee, Jamal Konneh, disclosed this after the vetting exercise Friday which was chaired by Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, a representative from the national level, with support from Collins Dauda and members of the regional vetting committee.
Mr. Konneh said one aspirant filed nomination forms online but failed to submit the required physical documents and appear before the committee for vetting, despite being given the opportunity to do so.
He also explained that petitions filed against two individuals were dismissed , adding that any aspirant dissatisfied with the outcome could appeal to the an Appeals committee at the national level for hearings.
Mr. Konneh cautioned the qualified aspirants against engaging in insults and personal attacks during their campaigns, insisting that the party would not hesitate to disqualify any candidate found engaging in such conduct.
He also reminded aspirants to comply with the national directive requiring those who had erected large campaign billboards to pull them down.
According to him, the party expects all candidates to conduct peaceful, merit-based and issue-focused campaigns to promote unity after the elections.
Mr. Konneh said the NDC was targeting an improvement on the 47 per cent of votes it secured in the Eastern Region during the last general elections.
He expressed confidence that a united and strong regional executive team could help the party surpass that performance and strengthen its chances of defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 general elections.
