The Finance Minister, Mr. Ken Ofori Atta, has said that the “Free SHS” policy initiated by the ruling NPP government has saved parents a lot of money and they can now invest properly in their ward’s future.
He made this known when delivering the mid-year 2020 budget on Thursday, July 23, 2020.
According to him, there has been a massive improvement in the secondary sector since a lot of students have had easy access to quality education.
The “Free SHS” policy was initiated by the president, Akuffo Addo when he assumed power. The policy was much known during his 2016 campaign. The policy was the top of all his manifestoes to Ghanaians.
Mr. Ofori Atta went on to say that, guardians and parents have been saved GH₵ 3.2 billion since 2017, and the intervention from the government has sustained the schooling of 1,199,750 students to date. This shows that there has been an increase from 813,443 students enrolled in 2016/2017.
In furtherance, Mr. Ofori Atta added that education is the primary driver for upward social and economic mobility and that is why they rolled out a raft of policy measures to improve the opportunities of Ghanaians.
“We invested 3.2 billion to implement Free SHS, resulting in over 1.2 million teenagers being in secondary school now, looking forward to better opportunities in life”.
“for their parents and families, this has translated into GHC 2.2 billion in savings and that is the money that the state has put back into the pockets of Ghanaians all across the country”, he added.
