The Electoral Commission of Ghana has cleared three women from Political Parties to join nine men to contest the presidential election in December.
The three women are Brigitte Akosua Dzogbenuku of the Progressive People’s Party, Maame Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party, and Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings from the National Democratic Party.
Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, who is contesting for the second time on the ticket of the National Democratic Party had 17, 207 votes, representing 0.16% in 2016.
Madam Brigitte Akosua Dzogbenuku of the Progressive People’s Party and Maame Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party are joining the race for the first time.
From 1957 to 1960 the head of state under the Constitution of 1957 was the Queen of Ghana, Elizabeth II, who was also the Monarch of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms.
Since Independence, no woman had become Vice President and President in Ghana before but most have held key positions in the Country which includes Ministers, Speaker of Parliament, Electoral Commissioners, Legislators, Chief Justice, and many others.
Presidential elections were held for the first time in Ghana on 27 April 1960. The elections were held alongside a referendum on creating an executive presidency.
