Ghana legend and 1978 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Mohammed Polo has cast doubt about the country winning the Africa Cup of Nations at the moment as he strongly believes the Black Stars is not respected anymore on the continent.
Ghana has failed to win major silverware since 1982. The Black Stars have come close to ending the trophy drought in the last decade, in 2010 Angola losing to Egypt in the finals and in 2015 Equatorial Guinea- Gabon as the Stars lost to Ivory Coast on a penalty shootout.
Despite sealing qualification to the 2021 AFCON tournament to be hosted by Cameroon next year, Polo said it will be difficult to end the trophy drought as he strongly believes the country is no more respected on the continent.
“To be frank, Ghana is not respected anymore on the continent. Some years back, other countries had great respect for our game but as we speak it is no more because they are able to score us with ease” he told Bryt FM.
He continued that, “During our time, countries on the continent especially the North Africans had to cheat before they can score u. It is about time we start organizing ourselves well. I can emphasize North African countries are currently ruling the game on the continent.”
