Water and sanitation minister, Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has appealed to Chiefs and other traditional leaders to support the government to root out galamsey hazard from the country.
According to the Minister, the government has set to impose a ban on mining activities to protect water bodies across the country thus if the chiefs and the traditional leaders in the affected areas do not throw their weight behind the government that decision might not come true.
Mrs. Dapaah said this in a tour joined by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and other key government functionaries.
Speaking to journalists on the tour, Mrs. Dapaah said the tour forms part of government’s collaborative efforts to methodically root out illegal small-scale mining and restore the sanctity of water bodies in the country.
She added that the government is embarking on several water projects but then the intake points of those water bodies have been compromised by activities of illegal miners.
Hence, the government has also tasked Regional Security Councils to move in and help clamp down on illegal mining in the affected areas.
