A total of ten women have been given the nod to serve as Assembly members in West Akyem Municipal and Upper West Akyem District Assembly of the Eastern Region.
Out of the number, five are elected Members and five are government appointees and the West Akyem Municipal has three elected members and three appointees while the Upper West Akyem District also has two elected members and two government appointees respectively.
After the successful inauguration of these Assemblies and swearing-in of Unit Committee and Assembly Members, the election of Presiding Members failed after runoff and third run and the next election is expected in the first week in February 2020.
In the Upper West Akyem District, the competition was between two people, namely, Eric Kwasi Mensah, immediate past PM and an Assembly Member for Danso Electoral Area and Samuel Aticho Sikayena, Assembly Member for Roman Ridge and current Constituency Secretary for the National Democratic Congress.
At the end of polls supervised by the Electoral Commission, Eric Kwasi Mensah pulled 23 votes against 16 votes for Samuel Aticho Sikayena but in the second run, Kwasi Mensah vote reduced to 20 again 19 for Aticho of Total valid vote cast at 39.
In the West Akyem Municipal, the competition was between two New Patriotic Party Members; Mr.Kwasi Baah Yirenkyi, Assembly Member for Breku-Manso B’ Electoral Area, who is also immediate past PM and the person is Mr.David Apetsi, government appointee and Constituency Organizer for NPP.
