Kwasi Antwi, a 25-year-old man has committed suicide by hanging on an about 15 feet tall coconut tree on Monday, October 11, 2021, at about 5:30am in Akyem Aperade Bonkagyeesu, a farming Community in Achiase District in the Eastern region.
According to the Achiase Police, the deceased climbed the coconut tree with a ladder to commit the act.
Police Investigators found about 8 feet tall ladder leaning against the coconut tree under the hanging body of the deceased.
The cause of his action is unknown. The body has been removed and deposited at the morgue.
Suicide cases continue to increase in the Eastern region.
A total of sixty (60) suicide cases were recorded so far Eastern region
The Eastern Region came second to Ashanti Region which despite its higher population recorded 61 cases.
According to the Mental Health Unit of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) statistics reveal 417 suicide-related deaths were recorded across the country during the period.
“First half of the year 2021 has witnessed higher records of attempted suicide cases across the country with a total of 417 recorded deaths”. Faustina Nuako a mental health Coordinator said.
Upper East region was third with 47 cases followed by Greater Accra – 37, Central region – 37, Volta region – 35, Oti region – 22, Bono East – 21, Western North – 17, Upper West – 17, Northeast – 16, Western region – 14, Ahafo region – 11, Bono region – 16, Northern region – 4
and Savannah – 3.
She explained that the majority of the victims were youth.
“The mental health outfit of the Ghana Health Service is embarking on a massive campaign to psych people to confide in relatives and friends in times of distress and depression”.
Meanwhile, Chief Psychiatrist Dr. Akwasi Osei has urged the media not to show images and describe how a victim committed suicide especially on TV, he says teaches young people to use the same model to commit suicide.
