Motorized tricycle riders popularly known as Pragia in Atebubu/Amantin of the Bono Region have are on sit-down strike over harassment by the local police.
According to the riders, the local Police have been arresting at the least opportunity over unlawful parking and other minor issues despite the fact that the Municipal Assembly has not allotted a place for them to park in spite of paying huge revenues to the assembly.
The Chairman of Pragia Association Ibrahim Zakaria (Zaki) explained their grievances to reporter Kwabena Manu that “Whenever they arrest them, they sent them to court for them to pay GHC 600”.
The Member of Parliament for Atebubu Amantin constituency Hon. Sanja Nanaja has meanwhile intervened and appealed to the leaders of the association to resume work but operate within the dictates of the law and road safety regulations.
Chief Inspector Isaac Banafo who is the station officer at Atebubu Police Command refuted the allegation of extortion but cautioned the operator’s riders to register their tricycles with DVLA to secure the necessary permissions to be on the road.
