The much talked about Yilo Krobo District Hospital which is one of the five (5) District Hospital projects initiated by former John Dramani Mahama before leaving office in 2016 has finally been opened for services.
The referral Hospital which comes with four (4) semi-detached Staff Bungalow also has the following components; Administration, Laboratory, Out-Patient Department, Public Health Centre, Rehabilitation Centre, Obstetrics and Neonatology Unit, Surgical and Intensive Care Unit, Maternity Bedward, General Bedward, Surgical Bedward, Emergency Unit, Oxygen Plant, Mortuary, Laundry, Logistics and Central Store, Facility Management, Disabled Parking Lodge, Public Parking and Staff Parking Lodge.
The hospital was handed over to the Ghana Health Service by the construction company, VAMED Engineering LTD with its local partner BATTES, in June 2021 but was not opened for public access creating agitations with pressure on the government to open the facility.
During the partial opening of the hospital on Thursday, April 21, 2022, Dr. Winfred Ofusu, the Eastern said due to lack of water at the hospital, only OPD, antenatal, emergency, dental, and laboratory services have been operationalized stating that the hospital will be fully operationalized when connected with water in the coming months.
The Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong said the functioning of the hospital shows government means well to the people in the Krobo area.
Albert Nyarkotey MP for Yilo Krobo who led the Minority caucus on the health committee of Parliament to inspect the hospital in September last year said the opening of the hospital has been long overdue but happy it has been done.
He said plans are advanced to connect water from the Somanya University to the hospital.
The Yilo Krobo District Hospital is a referral facility that will serve Yilo, Okere and other surrounding districts.
