Despite recognizing his failures, a section of the public has supported former President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge of the next NDC government’s readiness to repel the controversial electronic levy (e-levy).
The flagbearer of the main opposition party in his address at the ‘Ghana at the Crossroads’ lecture, stated the NDC’s decision to repel the tax should it win the 2024 general elections.
A section of the public sharing their views on the issue are of the view the former President’s comments are refreshing as they consider the tax as a hindrance to mobile and easy ways of transactions.
“Even though Mahama had ugly moments in his tenure, I still think his pledge is an assurance to some of us who do many mobile and online transactions. I support him 100%” a businessman told the reporter.
Some traders and market women were also not happy with the implementation of the tax as they claim it will negatively affect their business transactions.
They stated, “my brother, this tax is going to kill our business. It is going to bring armed robbers back on our roads because we cannot pay the 1.5% charge on monies we intend to share”.
On the other side, others were, however, satisfied with the implementation of the e-levy but questioned how proceeds will be spent.
“It is not bad for us as Ghanaians to pay tax but my problem is how the government is going to use the proceeds” some complained.
