A Toyota Hiace with registration number GR 5613-21 travelling from Accra to Kumasi has been involved in a fatal accident at Omenako near Suhum on the Accra to Kumasi highway of the Eastern Region.
The accident occurred on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
The speeding vehicle reportedly had one of its back tyres burst causing the driver to lose control of the steering wheel and suddenly crashed into a ditch.
Two passengers died on the spot and 12 were severely injured.
The injured and dead bodies were conveyed to Suhum government hospital.
Meanwhile, the Motor traffic and transport department of the Ghana Police service has commenced an investigation into the fatal accident on Akyem Begoro to Osiem Highway which claimed the lives of five persons.
According to the Police, on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at about 14: 41 pm they received information that there was an accident along Begoro – Osiem road near Akrumusu village.
Detective Sergeant Prosper Tetteh led Lance Corporal Agoalikum Rudolf and PW/Constable Rita Nyarko onboard a Service vehicle driven by Sergeant Alex Yeboah together with ADOII Antwi Opoku, Fire Officer in charge of six men proceeded to the scene of the accident and met 28 seater Benz Bus with registration number GR 4074 – E loaded with charcoal and maize which was upside down in a gutter with its tyres facing upward at a sharp curve near Akrumusu village.
According to the Police, the driver, Solomon Owusu and Kofi Boateng aged 46 were rescued and rushed to Begoro District Hospital.
While five persons whose names were given to the Police by a survivor Kofi Boateng, Kwame Atta, “Scorpion”, Kofi, Kwesi and Issac Teye were trapped by the bags of charcoal and maize.
They were also removed and rushed to Begoro District Hospital but were pronounced dead by Arthur Rita, a Physician Assistant of the said Hospital.
The bodies have since been deposited at the same Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, as part of the investigation, the scene was Photographed and important positions were marked down for measurement to be taken while the survivors were interrogated to help establish the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, one of the survivors has said they were from Donkorkrom heading towards Akim Agogo when the driver failed to break.
