Kibi government hospital has not recorded any maternal death in the last seventeen (17) months.
This great achievement is part of strives by management to ensure sustained zero maternal death and become a center of excellence in quality healthcare delivery.
The Eastern region has been battling high maternal mortality over the years.
Forty-Nine (49) institutional maternal deaths have been recorded between January to May ending this year 2022 in the region. The number is higher compared to previous years.
For instance, 40 and 44 maternal deaths were recorded same period in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
A total of 109 maternal deaths were recorded in the region in 2017 but decreased marginally to 89 in 2021
However, the Kibi Government Hospital led by the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Richard Nii Darku Dodoo is showing the way that zero maternal death is achievable.
Addressing staff of the hospital at the half-year performance review, the Medical Superintendent commended the staff for their hard work manifesting in a tremendous improvement in quality healthcare.
Bryt FM analysis of the improved performance indicators at the hospital points to several factors including efficient management by Dr. Nii Darku Dodoo-led management, expansion, and retooling of various wards, capacity building, and motivated staff.
The hospital for instance has received support from Ghana Commercial Bank for rehabilitation of the institution generator plant, accommodation support from Ghana gas, and donation of Doctors’ bungalows by the Ken and Angela foundation.
Staff capacity has also improved. For instance, some 69 staff have been mechanized, and many more.
Management has introduced a health fund for staff who may require emergency/critical medical assistance beyond the reach of Kibi Government Hospital.
This was commenced on 21st January 2021 after an unfortunate injury to one staff on 23rd December 2020 who needed prompt medical attention outside the hospital.
The funding source is mainly by staff generous contributions labeled YIBIMA which is triggered anytime a staff needs support. The hospital also makes monthly donations to the fund.
The funds have accrued GHC31,084.00 through the YIBIMA initiative, and GHC7,000.00 was from the hospital’s internally generated funds.
A total amount of GHC14,549.44 has been disbursed to support six (6) staff with various conditions.
This has motivated staff to work their hearts out at the hospital.
Mr. Frederick Ofosu, the Municipal Director of Health Services for Suhum Municipal and also acting as Health Director for Abuakwa South Municipal is impressed with the strides by Kibi government hospital toward healthcare excellence.
