Rite sports limited, organizers of senior high and tertiary basketball competitions, have launched the 2020 edition of the UPAC basketball championship.
The seventh edition of the annual event was successfully launched on Wednesday, March 3, 2020, at the Delish Restaurant in Accra.
The 2020 edition will see the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) making their first appearance in the UPAC since its inception.
According to the Head of Rite Sports, Yaw Sakyi Afari, the inclusion of GIJ is to test their level in basketball after they made their debut in the Ghana University Students Association (GUSA) games.
The University of Ghana is the reigning champions and are the most successful team, winning the last four editions spanning from 2016-2019. Accra Technical University is the next most successful team, winning the other two since its inception.
Speaking at the press conference, Yaw Sakyi Afari expressed his joy and added that he anticipates a very competitive tournament this year which will see a lot of tertiary students exhibit their talents in basketball.
Yaw Sakyi also assured that security will be intensified to make sure the tournament is devoid of violence.
Rite sports limited, organizers of the competition have lined up several activities to make this year’s event a memorable one.
The UPAC basketball championship seeks to develop a basketball program for tertiary institutions.
It has over the years also served as a great avenue for talents to be spotted to feed the males national basketball team for international assignments.
32 tertiary institutions will battle at the zonal level for a place in the finals slated for the University of Ghana campus later in the year.
