During a World Cup qualifier match between England and Sweden in 1989, England defender Terry Butcher was involved in a first-half clash of heads with Swedish striker Johnny Ekstrom, which left him bleeding profusely.
After receiving treatment and being bandaged up, he continued with the game.
At full time, Butcher’s white England shirt was totally stained with blood.
The game ended in a goalless draw and helped England qualify for the 1990 FIFA World Cup tournament hosted by Italy.
