The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), has announced a salary increment in 2023 to help pensioners to face microeconomic challenges in the country.
SSNIT has increased the payment of pensioners to nineteen per cent (19%) to help transform their financial status.
The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang has disclosed that they are paying about two hundred and thirty-four thousand (234,000) legitimate pensioners in the country.
According to Dr Ofori-Tenkorang, the statistics will change in 2023 because SSNIT will register new members.
He said SSNIT has done tremendous work for increasing the salary of pensioners amidst microeconomic challenges in recent times.
Briefing the press on Friday, January 13, 2023, at SSNIT headquarters in the Greater Accra region, Dr Ofori-Tenkorang indicated that they have summoned companies who fail to fulfil their obligations to their workers with court cases.
He said that SSNIT does not pay employees who don’t contribute to the scheme hence companies need to pay employees.
‘‘SSNIT has an obligation to make sure that your employees receive pay when they retire and cannot pay your employees with other people’s money. We are taking a huge liability from few,’’ said Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang.
He urged companies and employers to pay their SSNIT contribution on the 14th of every month to ease court summons.
Dr Ofori-Tenkorang stated that there are many electronics platforms to enable companies to make their contributions adding that SSNIT needs 5 billion Ghana cedis to pay retirees in 2023.
