Madina lawmaker, Lawyer Francis Xavier-Sosu has urged Government to as a matter of urgency take adequate measures to ratify the Protocol on Rights of Older Persons to fast-track access of older persons to basic standards and the full enjoyment of their fundamental rights and freedoms.
According to him, this has become necessary now more than ever considering the ontoward hardship and current socio-economic challenges being experienced by pensioners with respect to implementation of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) being rolled out by the Akufo Addo – Bawumia Government.
“It is evident that the DDEP being implemented by Government flies in the face of the Protocol’s objects, and efforts to achieve the Ghana and Africa we Want, where people of all ages prosper, including older persons” he stated.
The AU Protocol on the Rights of Older Persons provides norms and standards for the respect of rights of older persons in Africa, and shows governments’ commitment towards guaranteeing and safeguarding the rights of older persons related to social, economic, civil, political, and cultural rights, among others.
