The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP) in collaboration with UNICEF Ghana undertook a study to asses the existing national social protection system’s readiness to prepare for, cope with and adapt to shocks.
To that effect, a draft report on the findings and recommendations of the study has been prepared for review.
In view of the above, the Social Protection Directorate (SPD) under the auspices of MOGCSP – on Thursday 5th July, 2023 – held a Stakeholder Validation Meeting on the Draft Report of the Shock Responsive Social Protection System seeking to assess Ghana’s readiness to prevent and respond to shocks and stresses.
The objective of the workshop was for key stakeholders to discuss, review and validate the draft report to support government in decision-making and programing to strengthen, anticipate and adequately prepare timely response to shock through social protection systems.
In a welcome address read on behalf of the Deputy Minister for MoGCSP – Hon. Francisca Oteng-Mensah, the Ag. Director for SPD – Madam Abena Annobea Asare indicated that, discussions from the meeting will inform the design of a national social protection shock response strategy and other critical policies that will go a long way to promote and protect the wellbeing of all Ghanaians.
Delivering a statement on behalf of the Sector Minister, Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu, the Deputy Minister for MoGCSP, Hon Francisca Oteng-Mensah expressed her excitement about Ghana getting closer to having a comprehensive and robust National Shock Responsive Social Protection Systems.
She disclosed that Government has initiated processes to develop and implement a comprehensive social protection shock response strategy, to guide the provision of coordinated social protection services during emergencies.
“The design of the strategy necessitated the commissioning of two studies, to assess the shock responsiveness of social protection systems in Ghana.” She said.
Hon. Francisca Mensah commended the World Bank Ghana UNICEF Ghana, FCDO, World Food Programme and other partners for the continuous support to social protection efforts by the Government.
