The Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South in Eastern region Isaac Appaw Gyasi has directed basic schools in the municipality to stop extra – classes for students including candidates of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
It follows complains by parents that many schools are hiding behind the organization of extra- classes to extort from them unapproved fees.
The MCE issued the directive during a meeting with Education Directorate and Headteachers .
The directive takes immediate effect.
Extra classes in public junior high schools were banned by the government in 2017 for the reason that most teachers at the junior high schools charged students exorbitant fees and even punished those who couldn’t pay fueling school drop out.
The MCE’s decision is therefore enforcement of this directive.
However, the Headteachers are worried that, government has for many academic terms failed to release capitation grants for the smooth running of the schools therefore portions of the extra-classes were used to run the schools.
They also said absenteeism increasing due to months of strike by school feeding caterers.
