The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of comprehensive security measures in place to maintain law and order during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, scheduled for November 4, 2023. These measures include the deployment of a significant number of Police personnel across the country to oversee election security.
In an official statement issued on Friday, November 3, 2023, it was also announced that Police officers deployed for the election will be equipped with body-worn cameras to enhance security and transparency at all voting centers.
Furthermore, the Police Service has engaged in constructive discussions with key stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, the NPP Presidential Election Committee, and representatives of the Flagbearer hopefuls, to ensure a collaborative approach to maintaining law and order during the upcoming election.
The NPP’s presidential primaries are of great significance as they will determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections. The race is fiercely contested by four hopefuls: Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Food and Agriculture Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former Mampong MP, Francis Addai-Nimoh.
The selected candidate will face ex-President John Dramani Mahama, who received the endorsement of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier this year. The NPP’s decision holds substantial implications for the 2024 general election, as no political party in Ghana has secured more than two consecutive terms under the Fourth Republic, spanning from 1992 to the present. The months ahead are anticipated to witness intense political competition as the nation approaches the 2024 general election.
