Some aggrieved supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Upper West Akyem constituency in Eastern Region besieged the Regional Secretariate of the party to protest attempt to deny a parliamentary aspirant Eric Kwesi Danquah access to pick nomination form.
The constituency office of the party has been put under lock and key since nomination opened on December 19,2023 preventing Eric Kwesi Danquah from picking the form.
On Thursday December 21,2023 Eric Kwesi Danquah came to the Regional Office but was again denied access to the forms contrary to the party’s directives and regulations regarding the primaries.
The action is to ensure that the incumbent Member of Parliament
Hon. Frederick Obeng Adom contest unopposed.
Angry supporters of the parliamentary hopeful stormed the regional office clad in red hand band and apperrels to express their disapproval by the party to deny Eric Kwesi Danquah access to the nomination form.
Leader of the angrieved supporters Alex Kwame Mensah Twumasi called on the party leadership to call the Regional and constituency executives to order.
He said any attempt to impose the Member of a parliament to go unopposed will cause the party to lose the seat back to the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC).
Florence Larbi , one of the aggrieved supporters said the division in the party due to the attempt by the party to force the MP on the people affected the party’s performance in the District Level elections causing the party to lose 7 out of 8 electoral areas previously occupied by NPP affiliated Assembly Member.
Upper West Akyem constituency is the stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)
However,the ruling NPP won the parliamentary seat for the first time in 2020.
The incumbent Member of Parliament Frederick Obeng Adom defeated then NDC MP Derek Ohene Bekoe Assiful with 21,863 votes(51.93%) as against 20,196 votes(48.02%) .
