A 30-year-old carpenter David Dayo lost his life when a storey building collapsed on him in Hwidiem, Ahafo Region, on Monday, January 8, 2024.
Sampson Awuvofoge, an officer with the Hwidiem Fire Station, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that David was working inside the building when it suddenly collapsed, trapping him under the debris.
Despite a prompt distress call and the efforts of firefighters, the lack of appropriate equipment hindered their rescue operation.
Awuvofoge explained that it took some time before a backhoe machine could be brought to assist, but sadly, David was already found lifeless when they reached him.
Robert Dwomoh Mensah, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi South, who was present at the scene, disclosed that the owner of the aged building was in the process of converting it into a pharmacy.
However despite directives to acquire the necessary permit from the Assembly, the owner allegedly refused, leading to this unfortunate incident.
The exact cause of the building collapse is yet to be determined, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Meanwhile, the lifeless body of David Dayo has been deposited at the Saint Elizabeth Hospital mortuary.
