The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has denied any accusations that he insulted the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, or the Asante Kingdom when screening candidates for the region’s parliamentary seat.
There are rumors that Chairman Wontumi spoke some abhorrent things about the Asantehene.
Both Ofori Attah Tom-Tom, the chairman of the Manhyia South NPP Constituency, and Nana Kwaku Duah, the Chief of Kokoso and the Obremponhene of Otumfuo, are said to have officially complained to the Kumasi Traditional Council.
However, Chairman Wontumi refuted the accusations made against him in a speech on Wontumi Radio.
“I have a lot of respect for the Asantehene and the Asante Kingdom and will never do anything to run this kingdom down, never. All these allegations are not true; they are pure lies. I cannot do that. Anybody who wishes to lie can do it,” he said.
Bernard Antwi Boasiako was called by the Kumasi Traditional Council on January 22 in response to his purportedly disparaging remarks directed towards the Asantehene.
The Council requested that the NPP’s leadership make sure Mr. Boasiko shows up before it on Monday of next week to respond to remarks he allegedly made during the screening of Manhyia South’s parliamentary candidates.
Over the issue, certain regional party officers were led to the Manhyia Palace by the NPP’s National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, and General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.
