National Communications Team Member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Avoka Alberta Wuntima has stated that former President John Dramani Mahama has no right to rename public universities in the country.
Alberta Wuntima affirmed that Mr. Mahama is claiming credit for establishment of some public Universities in Ghana.
Alberta Wuntima said that it is widely known that the NDC especially under Mr. Mahama’s watch has no single infrastructure record in the 3 campuses of the original University for Development Studies (UDS).
She explained that Mr. Mahama could not build on the vision of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings in establishing the University.
Alberta Wuntima challenged Mr. Mahama to name any single structure he initiated in the original UDS.
“As for the Tamale Campus, he only needs to ask his party people in UDS which government constructed all the facilities on that Campus. The only facility (just one) attributable to the NDC was again done during the late President Atta Mills. We don’t have short memories after all,’’ Alberta Wuntima clarified in a statement.
“In the then Wa Campus, which is now SDD-UBIDS, every single infrastructure there was put up during President Kuffour’s time. The only project initiated by the late Prez. Mills still stands uncompleted. Upon autonomy, the government of President Nana Addo added to the infrastructure stock. The same story holds for the then Navrongo Campus, now CKT-UTAS.’’
“Mr. Mahama is otherwise described as a communications expert. But recent pronouncements seem to me that this description needs further evaluation. It may also be that we are in the political season, and so anything passes,’’ the statement said.
The statement continued: “I am focusing on his threat to rename all public universities that were named by President Akufo Addo. Mr. Mahama is also quoted as claiming credit for his NDC for the establishment of all public Universities in Ghana. Nobody will waste time discussing this bizarre claim.’’
I will not dwell much on that except to ask what names he will be reverting the Universities in Wa and Navrongo to? These have never been known to have any other names. The current names are the foundation names. So nobody has renamed anything that warrants another renaming.
