Ghana and Côte D’Ivoire in June 2023 became the first ECOWAS countries to implement the ECOWAS Free Roaming initiative, according to Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Minister for Communications and Digitalisation.
She said that means that Ghanaian subscribers visiting Côte d’Ivoire will receive calls without paying roaming fees and will be charged Côte d’Ivoire’s local rates when making calls to Ghana while in Côte d’Ivoire, and vice versa. Also, subscribers traveling between both countries will be exempt from international roaming charges.
Addressing the media in Accra, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said Ghana will soon establish a similar bilateral ECOWAS Roaming Service with Togo, Benin, and the Gambia.
Implementation of the National Roaming Initiative:
The Minister said the National Roaming Service has been completed and it is a service which allows phones to automatically connect to the Mobile Network with the best Quality of Service available in any area, regardless of which Operator one is primarily subscribed to.
This initiative has not only expanded access to telecommunications services but has also fostered greater unity and inclusivity within our digital landscape.
Mrs Ekuful said Rural as of February 2024, a total of 1,010 of the planned sites have been successfully constructed, with 618 of them already operational, offering essential Voice and Data services to about 1,620 rural communities who can now make calls via their mobile phones thereby enhancing social and economic activities in these communities.
