Nana Baffuor Kwabena Baah, the Akwansrahene of Apapam, is calling for the immediate arrest of a woman identified as Yaa Asantewaa, also known as Getty of the Asuaba community in Upper West Akyem.
She labeled Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin and the Okyeman Land Protection Taskforce as a “criminal gang.”
Nana Baffuor Kwabena Baah stated: “We urge the Ghana Police Service to arrest the woman for her misguided statement.”
Getty, speaking at a press conference on behalf of about 20 communities expressing displeasure over the seizure of their farmlands and the destruction of 6000 acres of farms by the Okyeman Land Protection Taskforce, described the Okyenhene and the Taskforce as criminal gangs.
Getty said: “On behalf of 20 affected communities gathered here this morning, the various media houses present, we greet you with pain and heavy hearts. We are dressed in red and black cloths not because one is bereaved or mourning but rather the pain is with regards to the forceful seizure of our lands through intimidation by Okyenhene and his criminal elements.”
She continued: “It will interest you to note that as we speak, the Okyenhene and his gang of criminals, led by one ex-convict Nana Baah Akwansrah, popularly known as Haruna, are illegally breaking and destroying more than 6000 acres of farmlands, ranging from palm plantations, coconut plantations, pawpaw plantations, cassava farms, and cocoa farms. The rest are maize farms, cabbage farms, sugarcane farms, yam farms, and many more.”
Since the pronouncement, Getty has fled the community and gone into hiding to escape arrest after some individuals allegedly stormed the community in an attempt to arrest her.
Nana Baffuor Kwabena Baah said the
Asuaba community and surrounding areas are under Akyem Abuakwa traditional area; therefore, the lands belong to Okyenhene therefore he is the allodial owner not settlers occupying the Land.
