In anticipation of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s 8th State of the Nation Address (SoNA), all 137 members of the Minority Caucus in Ghana’s parliament reported late on the House floor.
The reason behind the lack of seating of the National Democratic Congress Members of Parliament (NDC MPs) is unclear, while all of the MPs from the opposing party are seated.
The president was supposed to begin speaking on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.
However, there are rumors that the MPs in the Minority Caucus are dissatisfied with the security setup for Akufo-Addo’s speech in the Parliament House.
It is believed that the MPs feel that the arrangement suggests they are a danger to the president.
As President Akufo-Addo delivers his final State of the Nation Address, former President John Dramani Mahama is in parliament.
The National Democratic Congress flagbearer, seated next to his former chief of staff, Julius Debrah, and his special assistant, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, in parliament.
Former Speaker of the House Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, and Council of State member Sam Okudzeto are also in attendance.
A number of other dignitaries are already sitting in the house, including First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Second Lady Samira Bawumia, Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Opare-Asarr, and former Convention Peoples Party (CPP) flagbearer Ivor Greenstreet.
