The 76th anniversary of the 28th February 1948 Christianborg Castle crossroad shooting incident will be held in Accra today with wreaths laying and flag-raising ceremony as part of the 67th Independence Day Anniversary in Koforidua.
Three Ghanaian ex-servicemen lost their lives during the shooting incident with the British Superintendent, Imray.
Mr Imray fired at the ex-servicemen, killing Sergeant Adjetey, Cpl Attipoe and Pte. Odartey Lamptey.
The brief but solemn ceremony is commemorated every year to honour ex-servicemen who were on a peaceful march to the Osu Castle in 1948 to present a petition over their unpaid allowances to the then British governor, Gerald Creasy, but were shot and killed by the colonial police. It is part of Ghana’s independent struggles.
Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong will join other statestate officials and Heads of security agencies to commemorate the event.
The 67th Independence Day Anniversary to be hosted in Koforidua was officially launched weeks ago.
“Our Democracy Our Pride,” this year’s celebration aims to reinforce democratic values and uphold peace, particularly in light of the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara will honor the event as the Special Guest of Honour, adding prestige to the occasion.
The celebration will showcase the rich diversity of Ghanaian culture and heritage, with 21 contingents participating, including various security agencies and 11 school contingents, alongside captivating performances.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s decision in 2017 to rotate the independence celebration among Ghana’s 16 regions underscores the commitment to showcase each region’s unique potential, thereby stimulating economic growth and development.
Mr. Lord Commey, Director of Operations at the Jubilee House and Chairman of the National Planning Committee, emphasized the importance of projecting the Eastern Region onto the global stage.
This is particularly significant as it marks President Akufo Addo’s final Independence Day celebration as President and serves as an opportunity to highlight his home region.
Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong emphasized the need for seamless coordination and communication among the various committees involved in organizing the celebration to ensure its success.
A diverse array of activities has been planned, including commemorations, debates, forums, and awards ceremonies, aimed at engaging and entertaining participants of all ages. These activities culminate in a grand finale featuring fireworks, sporting events, and cultural displays, symbolizing the nation’s unity and progress.
