Two (2) Ghanaian groups (Lahibali Theatre Art and Africa Community Internet Programme) who submitted their various projects for the 2024 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes, have been awarded Certificates of Recognition as Champions in their respective categories.
The event which was held on 30th May 2024 during the 2024 WSIS+20 Forum High Level Event at the ICT Discovery, ITU Montbrillant Building, was aimed to celebrate the awardees for their best projects for each category.
The Chief Director for the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, Mr. Alexander Yaw Arphul, who presented the Prices on behalf of the Sector Minister, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful ( MP), commended the awardees for their outstanding ICT projects and initiatives that propels the development of the information society, the WSIS process and Action Lines, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Lahibali Theatre Art was awarded the Champion’s Certificate of Recognition in WSIS Action Line 15, Cultural Diversity and Identity, Linguistics Diversity and Local Content, for its project “Peace Forum”.
Africa Community Internet Programme was also awarded the Champion’s Certificate of Recognition in WSIS Action Line 17, Ethical Dimensions of the Information Society, for its eponymous project “Africa Community Internet Programme”. The award was received by Professor Kofi Appiah Okyere, a professor of Accounting Practice at Syracuse University, New York, U.S.A, who submitted the project.
About WSIS Prizes 2024 Champions Ceremony
The international event recognizes outstanding ICT projects and initiatives that are propelling the development of the information society, the WSIS process and Action Lines, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Since its inception, the WSIS Prizes has become a cornerstone of the WSIS Stocktaking process, proudly maintained by the International Telecommunication Union since 2004.
Since the launch of the first annual WSIS Prizes contest in 2012, over 5,000 submissions have been received, culminating in the announcement of over 1000 champions across 18 Action Line Categories. This vibrant contest has engaged more than 500,000 stakeholders in its submission and voting phases, while millions around the world have been reached through promotions of the Winners and Champions, highlighting the significance of WSIS on a global scale.
