Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has urged urged teachers to refrain from engaging in negative political activities as the country approaches its next election cycle.
Ghana is gearing up to hold Presidential and Parliamentary elections on December 7,2024.
This year’s election is very crucial as a former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC who lost his second term bid is staging a comeback against a sitting Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Daniel Affadu, GNAT’s Deputy General Secretary for Administration and Labour Relations, admonished that in an interview with the media in Koforidua during a soccer tournament by the Association to commemorate International Youth Day that, “Please do not let [politicians] lead you into spending your energy in doing negative things because when we do, and this country is plunged into war, all of us are going to pay the price,” he warned.
Affadu also called on the Electoral Commission to ensure a level playing field for all political actors in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that “peace is non-negotiable.”
He urged the media to avoid sensationalism and focus on fostering a peaceful environment during the election period. “When we do that, we will have a strong and unified nation as we move into the election,” Affadu concluded.
