National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has strongly criticized the government’s decision to deploy the military to border towns across Ghana to enforce a ban on grain exports.
This action comes in the wake of severe drought-induced crop failures in the northern and middle belts of the country.
Asiedu Nketia described the military deployment as a continuation of what he terms “ethnic profiling,” allegedly aimed at suppressing votes in NDC strongholds, particularly in the Volta Region.
He drew parallels to the 2020 elections when, according to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government used the COVID-19 pandemic as a pretext to station soldiers at the Volta Region borders under the guise of enforcing cross-border restrictions.
Speaking to voters in Afram Plains, Asiedu Nketia accused the NPP government of consistently targeting individuals from the Volta Region since coming to power.
He urged voters to support the NDC, emphasizing that it is the only party committed to the development of the Afram Plains area.
The NDC chairman also expressed his displeasure over the relocation of the Agriculture Satellite Campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) from Donkokrom to Anyinam Abuakwa by the NPP government. He claimed the original plan by the NDC was intended to spur accelerated development in the Afram Plains.
In his address, Asiedu Nketia pledged that an NDC government would prioritize the construction of the region’s deteriorating roads to enhance agricultural productivity.
He also addressed internal divisions within the NDC urging supporters not to engage in Skirt and blause votes.
He said Kpeli Worlas a parliamentary aspirant who has declared intention to contest as Independent parliamentary candidate in Afram Plains North has been dismissed from the party.
He said the party noticed he is being sponsored by the NPP to create divisions in NDC as part of grand scheme to take the seat.
