The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has boldly asserted that there is a coordinated effort by Ghana’s Judiciary and Executive to undermine Parliament’s authority. He confidently frames this as a clear power struggle between the branches of government.
Bagbin’s allegations emerge from a recent Supreme Court ruling that prevented him from declaring four parliamentary seats vacant. This ruling has ignited a crucial debate over the boundaries of the Speaker’s powers and the undue influence of the judiciary on parliamentary matters.
The Speaker rightly challenged the Supreme Court’s ruling of stay off execution, asserting that Parliament must maintain exclusive authority over its own decisions. He also moved to nullify a writ from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, which sought judicial intervention regarding the disputed seats.
In a decisive media briefing, Bagbin firmly accused the Judiciary and Executive of compromising legislative independence and asserted that such interference threatens the stability of Ghana’s democracy. He emphasized that parliamentary authority must remain free from judicial control, warning that this undermines the vital principle of separation of powers in Ghana’s Constitution.
Bagbin called on Ghanaians to stand firm in protecting the independence of all branches of government, underscoring the essential role of legislative autonomy in safeguarding democracy.
He stated, “The recent actions of the judiciary are a blatant interference with Parliament, indicating a troubling collusion between the Judiciary and Executive aimed at undermining our institution.”
