Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Parliament’s minority leader, has noted that the reintroduction of road tolls, as declared by Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister for Roads and Highways designate, will not lessen the responsibilities faced by Ghanaians.
The Effutu politician claims that removing the E-levy and enacting road tolls will simply make Ghanaians’ currently existing misery worse.
During the discussion of the ministerial nominations in Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, Afenyo-Markin stated, “On this issue of the road toll, they say they are going to do digitalisation. We believed that they would lessen the burden on Ghanaians when it comes to levies and taxes because they had committed to it, but now you are going to impose another levy.”
He added, “So when they remove the e-levy, they are going to look for the money on road tolls so the value is the same. They claim that they are going to repeal the e-levy law, introduce road tolls, and even charge more. You claim you are committed to relieving the burden you claim is on the ordinary Ghanaian. If indeed you are committed to the ordinary Ghanaian, don’t introduce any road toll. ”
Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s remark is in response to a revelation made by Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways, on Monday, January 20, 2025, that road tolls will be reinstated during his tenure as minister and that the previous government’s decision to abolish them was unlawful.
