Patrick Yaw Boamah, the member of parliament for Okaikwei Central, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) misjudged his political power in the 2024 elections, thinking they could easily defeat him with a more well-known candidate.
The MP for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claimed in an interview with an Accra-based TV station that the NDC’s selection of entertainment mogul Baba Sadiq as their parliamentary candidate was a calculated move to overshadow him.
He maintained that his popularity and rapport with voters eventually won him the election.
“The NDC thought I was a pushover, so they did their best to present a candidate who would show off a bit, but I’ve proven my credibility to my constituency,” Patrick Boamah stated.
During the 2024 elections, one of the most-watched races in the Greater Accra Region was the Okaikwei Central parliamentary race. Baba Sadiq, a prominent player in Ghana’s entertainment business and the originator of the 3Music Awards, was hailed as one of the new faces that may flip the seat for the NDC.
With a strong social media presence and a youth-focused campaign, Sadiq’s entry into the race generated substantial attention and offered what many analysts called the largest challenge yet to Patrick Boamah’s political career.
But Boamah, who has represented the constituency as an MP since 2012, easily won the seat back. He thinks the electorate responded better to his campaign’s emphasis on continuity, local development initiatives, and responsiveness to community issues.
Despite the NDC’s increasing popularity in urban constituencies, his election solidified the NPP’s hold in Okaikwei Central and marked his fourth term in Parliament.
