Paa Willie, Chairman of the National Concern Drivers Association, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the recent reduction in transportation fares across Ghana.
Speaking on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney on Bryt fm on Monday, May 26, 2025, Paa Willie voiced concerns over the new fare adjustments.
He explained that the association held a meeting with the Minister of Transport, who initially proposed a 20% reduction. However, the association found that figure unacceptable and negotiated a 15% reduction instead, which officially took effect on Saturday, May 24, 2024.
According to Paa Willie, some drivers are refusing to comply with the new fares, and alleged that political influence is partly to be blamed. He warned politicians—both from the NPP and NDC—to stay out of the affairs of transport operators.
He emphasized that political parties will come and go, but the association must remain focused in protecting its members’ interests.
He cautioned driver unions leaders who may be influenced by political actors, stating that anyone encouraging non-compliance will be removed from their post and replaced.
“When it comes to fare increase, everyone cooperates. So why not cooperate when it’s time to reduce the fares?” he questioned.
The Chairman further claimed he has evidence, including letters sent to drivers encouraging defiance. “If you dare us, we will expose those behind this,” he warned. He made it clear that the new 15% fare reduction is final and that any driver who fails to comply will face disciplinary action.
Paa Willie concluded by issuing a final warning: “Today is the last day. Any driver found charging the old fares will be in serious trouble.” He also commended drivers in the Eastern Region for adhering to the new fares and ensuring a smooth implementation.
